Winchester was selected in 2016 as the ammunition supplier for the US Army's Standard Rifle System (MHS) program that delivers the M1152. Since the tour was recently released to the public, we had to check it out.

Using a 115-grain flat nose steel bullet, the 9x19mm Luger bullet has a unique shape. With a brass case and military grade, it has a muzzle velocity of 1,320 fps, which translates to 445 ft/lbs of energy. Reduce these gears to 1.301/432 at 5 yards and 132/387 at 25 yards according to the charts provided by the company.

"Winchester was proud to develop the M1152 for service with the United States Army and has been selected as the sole ammunition supplier for the US Army's Standard Rifle System (MHS) program," Winchester said in a press release earlier this year. "Customers can now use the same product selected by the US Army for their training needs."
The company has long been in the 9mm industry for the US military. Back in 1942, the War Department adopted the 116-grain FMJ at 1,400 fps as the "Cartridge, Cannon, 9mm, M1" and Winchester was contracted to produce millions of these true parabellum shells for Union use. Pistols and SMGs like the STEN rifle and others during WWII. In addition, Winchester has been the prime contractor for the military's M882 9mm cartridge, adopted in 1985 for use with the M9 Beretta for generations.
The M1152 ammo sent for testing bears the title stamp "WMA 19", which is common for ammunition produced at the company's Oxford, Mississippi plant. Unlike the basic NATO 124 manufactured by the company, there is no NATO "cross" stamp.
Current 124-grain Winchester NATO loads typically run at about 100fps or faster than standard FMJ loads of the same weight. In benchmark testing, we found that the Active Service M1152 sample sent to us averaged 1310, within about 10fps of the advertised range.

The M1152 is more than a training round, as the Pentagon has purchased Winchester-made quantities of M1153 9mm rounds—which use 147-grain blanks—for use in MHS series pistols—at least in the commercial market. Even the box is marked like that. With that in mind, we didn't test bores or expansion on these flat-nosed steel bullets. For personal defense, a load like Winchester's PDX1 Defender loaded with JHP, available in 147 and 124 grains, would be a better choice.
Winchester recommends that you use M1152 in good conditions only in modern 9mm rifles, as it uses 10 to 15 percent higher pressure than the industry standard 9mm Luger pressure.
In reliability testing, we ran the M1152 through a variety of pistols, including the Sig P320, Sig P229, Beretta 92, Diamondback DB9 G4, Glock G19X and S&W M&P M2.0. The number of jam sammiches observed in 290 rounds with six different arms of 9mm =

In one type of military-grade liner test, we submerged 10 M1152 rounds in distilled water for 24 hours. Such a requirement is often found in government contracts to test duty tours. Cartridges were measured after such immersion and showed no signs of swelling. All fired from the weapon under controlled conditions with no problems to report.
When it comes to practical accuracy, we were able to consistently hit the center of a silhouette target out to 25 yards without assistance.
The current MSRP on the M1152 is $29.99 for a 100-round deck pack with a 500-round box on the way. It's unclear if the company will sell its M1152 rounds to the public in 1,000-round green ammo boxes, as it currently does with the 124-grain NATO loads, but hey, anything is possible. For affordable 9mm ammo, Winchester also sells 115-grain Service Grade for about $10 in a brown box.
