The magazine catch on the Gen4 and Gen5 frames is reversible and extends toward the rear of the gun. The reversible magazine catch is easier for the shooter and allows him to change the catch to the left or right side of the gun.

Gen4 and Gen5 have a rough textured frame surface (Gen4 RTF) designed to improve grip traction without being too aggressive. It is present on the frame as well as on the back straps replaced.

Effective 6/21/22, GLOCK will ship all MOS pistols with a polymer top plate instead of a metal plate. The new Carry Optics department is still growing. Locally, more and more people are participating in pistol slide competitions. Everyday carry and the "tactical" world are also where slide mounted optics are becoming mainstream.

Review: Glock Model 34 9mm Generation Five Mos

This slide optical technology developed will be part of the shooting world for some time, for several good reasons: point of view is faster than using traditional iron sights; people are forced to look at the threat and the target instead of focusing on the front of the eye, so the optics are more natural than the front of the eye; point let nature take its course when it comes to shooting a gun, and it's simpler and faster. The other reality is that time creeps up on us all; vision deteriorates and seeing a point is easier for older eyes. Being in the middle of my midlife crisis, I'm a bit of an authority on blackout vision.

Another factor is that most gun people like gear. They find optics and weapons to be cool, and they are right.

Glock has a proven record in both the competition and field carry. This gun is sure to continue that trend.

When Jake told me we had a Glock G34 Gen 5 MOS ($721.99, Brownells.com) on the way for review, I wasn't too excited. Everyone in the shooting world is familiar with Glock pistols and probably has strong feelings one way or another about them. There are several Glock pistols sitting in a safe a few feet from me. They shoot well but I don't carry. I would describe myself as a moderate when it comes to Glock, not a fan but not a hater either. Will this Gen 5 MOS affect my Glock position?

At first glance, the Gen 5 looks similar to the previous version of the Glock G34. The Gen 5 has the same front sight and adjustable rear sight as the Gen 3 and has adjustable/replaceable rear straps which are a great idea for any gun (and are becoming standard in the polymer frame world). The light/accessory rail is the same as the previous designs, and the magazine release and slide release are the same size and shape as the previous models. However, Gen 5 has a limited slide release. Kudos to Glock for thinking of left-handed and weak-handed shooters that this gun can compete with or carry. The grip is thinner than Gen 3, and the finger grooves are gone. Accommodates the hand better than the Gen 3. Will the fit and feel generate the best results in the range?

The Glock G34 Gen 5 MOS has an extended barrel and larger slide size to match.

The slide is an area where things change. The 5 does not have an open top slide behind the front sight. It is a solid, full slide at the end of the gun's muzzle, machined to accept the optics between the ejection port and the rear sight. The sliding cap is held in place by two screws, which can be removed so that the cap can be replaced with an adapter plate to fit the desired optic. The test model arrived with a Glock MOS adapter set of four adapter plates, a set of screws, and a small tool to install the floor plate and optics. (An adapter is required and comes with the gun.) Glock certainly gets the job done in this area; Now I'm starting to shift more towards the Glock fan of the spectrum. But how will it shoot?

After receiving the Gen 5, I went right to the range and shot a few rounds from the gun. The iron sights required no adjustment and seemed to perform well enough at 10, 15 and 25 yards while shooting groups. My Gen 3 does well in this type of shooting as well, but not so well in competition and speed drills. At this point, however, there was no evidence that Gen 5 was not the shooter.

This year I start the range session with some longer range shooting drills, with targets 30 to 50 yards while standing, doing these drills with either a Glock G34 or G17. It was very humbling at the beginning of the year, but things are getting better. I have run this Gen 5 in this role several times and have found it to be very accurate at distance every time I have used it in practice. With iron sights, it shot as well and probably better than the Gen 3. The trigger seems a bit better and fits my hand better. I have built confidence in the accuracy of this gun, but have no experience with anything like match conditions.

The next test came in a pistol carry match held in May at the Riley Conservation Club. After the game, I flashed Gen 5 and ran every step of the score again. This match format required stealth, using a hit factor scoring system with low target score values. I won the match with my own carry but wanted to see how the Gen 5 would compare. I enjoyed the advantage of having already shot the steps and I did not have any real match pressure, so maybe it was not a true apples to apples comparison but it. would have been under conditions such as competition and testing.

To paint a more complete picture, I did not design and shoot the Gen 5 from a case or preview. I was also tired of running and scoring every shooter throughout the game. My total time with my carry gun was 42.60 seconds for the match with 46 alphas and nine charlies. There are 5 improve this score with a total match of 39.03 seconds with 41 alpha, 13 characters and a delta. As Buffalo Springfield said, something is going on here - This Gen 5 is better than my carry gun. Perhaps my moderate stance on Glock is compromised; There are 5 works well.

Jake Martens and I got together at the Riley Conservation Club in July and tested this Gen 5 with a USPSA shootout. Jake will be shooting Gen 5 equipped with a Vortex Viper 6 MOA red dot optic for Carry Optics. I shoot with sights made as can be found in the production department.
